Surviving the First Six Weeks
What it's really like to live with a new baby is sometimes
quite a surprise. Becoming a parent and caring for a newborn may present
challenges for which we feel unprepared. In this class we will help you
prepare for the changes this birth and new baby will bring and give you
practical advice on how to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Our instructors are experienced postpartum care providers as well as
mothers. Topics include:
- most commonly experienced issues and concerns in
the early weeks postpartum
- coping with sleep deprivation
- how mom may feel physically in the early weeks
- changes in dad's life
- coping with the emotional ups-and-downs: when to
ask for help
- how and where to get education and practical support
- meeting your own needs
- changes from week to week as baby grows
- tips
for soothing a fussy baby
Parents are encouraged to bring their individual concerns
and questions, as there will be time for discussion and brainstorming.
After this 3.5-hour class, there will be opportunities for
further communication with the instructors. Please note: this class
does not cover baby care basics. Please take our baby care class for
practice with dressing, diapering, and bathing your baby.

The Happiest Baby on the Block
New babies are such a blessing, but they can also bring with them sleepless nights,
crying, and sometimes quite a bit of extra stress.
Learn an extraordinary approach to keeping
your baby happy. In our Happiest Baby Class new parents will learn step-by-step how to help their
baby sleep better and how to soothe even the fussiest baby in minutes...even seconds!
Magic? A miracle? No, it ’s a reflex!™
Our class is based on the highly effective approach to babies pioneered by Dr. Harvey Karp in his
best-selling book and DVD, The Happiest Baby on the Block.
Parents will also learn:
- Why the idea that colic is due to gas pains is mostly an old wives tale
- Why keeping the house quiet may actually be upsetting to many newborns.
- Why most babies get more upset in the evening.
- Why it's impossible to spoil young babies.
- An easy way to help infants sleep a few hours more at night.
- Why fathers are often the best baby calmers in the family.
Happiest Baby is best taken in your last trimester of pregnancy, but can also be taken with your baby up to 3 weeks postpartum.
Class includes a Parent Kit containing The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD
and Soothing Sounds CD- a $40 retail value.
About the instructor:
As a certified postpartum doula, Heather’s main focus in getting the new little family settled and
comfortable, so then they can start to get to know one another. One of the ways she does this is
by showing parents how to read their little ones and respond accordingly. Heather has
enjoyed teaching the Happiest Baby on the Block techniques as a way for parents to calm their little
ones. It's not that it is a new and exciting thing to try; it's just bringing all the little things
our grandmothers have been doing for years together in a few easy steps. Heather truly believes that
this is something any parent can use to get results immediately and gain not only a calm and content baby
but confidence in their parenting as well.
